Directions to Tiverton Canal Horse Drawn Barge

So you've decided to visit Mid Devon's living heritage attraction, the Tiverton Horse-Drawn Barge? We're looking forward to seeing you!

Now you need to know how to get here, right? Tiverton Canal is near the Devon city of Exeter to the South, near the Somerset town of Taunton to the East and to the South of the North Devon town of Barnstaple.

We've compiled some simple instructions for how to get here from each direction by car.

Directions from the M5 (Exeter, Wellington or Taunton)

  1. Follow the M5 to Junction 27, following the A361 towards Tiverton/Barnstaple (3rd Exit from Taunton, 1st Exit from Exeter)
  2. Follow the A361 to the A396 exit to Bickleigh/Tiverton* and then take the 1st exit at the roundabout onto Heathcoat Way (A396).
  3. Continue to follow Heathcoat Way taking the 2nd Exit (by McDonalds)
  4. At the roundabout take the third exit onto Great Western Way (A396)
  5. Turn left onto Old Road
  6. At the roundabout take the first exit onto Canal Hill
  7. Take the second left into the Grand Western Canal Car Park (Pay and Display)

Directions from Barnstaple, North Devon

  1. Follow the A361 South from Barnstaple towards Tiverton / Exeter, travelling past South Molton over multiple roundabouts.
  2. When you approach Tiverton, crossing the River Exe, at the Bolham Roundabout, take the 2nd exit and stay on the A361.
  3. Take the next exit towards Bickleigh/Tiverton on the A396.
  4. Continue to follow Heathcoat Way taking the 2nd Exit (by McDonalds)
  5. At the roundabout take the third exit onto Great Western Way (A396)
  6. Turn left onto Old Road
  7. At the roundabout take the first exit onto Canal Hill
  8. Take the second left into the Grand Western Canal Car Park (Pay and Display)

While we provide these to help you and they are correct as of the time of publishing (2nd August 2024), instructions are subject to change due to building work.

*In late 2023, a new junction on the A361 was opened for 'Post Hill'. This means that we are now the 3rd exit on the A361, with the first being to Tiverton Parkway Train Station/Samford Peverell, the second for Post Hill, and the third for us (A396 Bickleigh/Tiverton) .
