Tiverton Canal has been awarded with prestigious Green Flag status yet again. This is the sixth year in a row the canal has won the award, meeting the highest standards in environmental and heritage conservation, meaning the canal is considered a clean, safe and welcoming environment for families to visit.

The Canal is also one of just 1476 parks and green spaces to be awarded the status by Keep Britain Tidy, an independent environmental charity. Cllr Des Hannon, county councillor for Tiverton East and vice chairman for the Canal’s joint advisory committee, said: “Everyone who already knows the Grand Western Canal is fully aware of its charms – yet another Green Flag is a bonus.” He also voiced his opinion on the Canal and said: “This shouts what a wonderful welcome we have for visitors. It’s also a quality stamp on the work of the canal’s staff and dedicated friends. Thanks to them.”

It seems Tiverton Canal have been enjoying much success this year with the popular Bicentenary festival back in May, and the much anticipated 40th Anniversary celebrations coming up on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August.

Kevin Wilson, Mid Devon Councillor and chairman of the joint advisory committee, said this of the Canals sixth Green Flag award: “To maintain such high standards to be awarded the Green Flag award for six consecutive years requires not just a lot of hard work on behalf of our staff and volunteers, but significant and stable resources to fund such works.”

“I hope this award focuses on the importance of assured funding when our partners begin their budget preparations for next year.”
